6/2/10: The Office of Operations has issued the below interpretation on warning sign requirements at horizontal curves. State and local transportation agencies will find this interpretation very useful as they strive to comply with the 2009 MUTCD requirements. This interpretation offers highway agencies the flexibility, based upon engineering judgment, to select appropriate speed value (posted or statutory speed, 85th percentile speed, or prevailing speed) for determining horizontal curve warning signs. We heard concerns from State DOTs that the 2009 MUTCD language can be interpreted to require agencies to conduct resource intensive speed studies. Please share this information with your State and local partners. Also, this interpretation is posted on the MUTCD website.
