Putnam County Fire / EMS holds Teen Driver Safety Programs in High Schools

Putnam County Fire / EMS presents several “Teen Driver safety Outreach Programs” in high schools throughout the year. With Prom season rapidly approaching, in April, Putnam County welcomed speaker Shannon Pickard from Houston Texas to our high schools. His focus was on Teen Driver Safety and the results of the choices they make. He used comedy to demonstrate how to turn your bad situations around to work for you instead of against you. Students were able to see that proper planning helps them make the right decisions when placed in different scenarios. These situations include alcohol, drugs, seatbelt use and safe driving habits such as not driving distracted. The high schools are also involved in competitions against each other. The first program is called the “Battle of The Belts”. Putnam Fire / EMS does random seatbelt counts. The schools that have the greatest improvement and the highest percentage of seatbelt use will win a laptop computer for the schools.  They are also doing safety videos related to driver safety. The winning schools will be announced on Friday June 4th. Putnam County Fire / EMS was able to provide these programs through a grant from the State of Florida Department of Transportation.
